Set the full height of the tall wall - gable ends, great rooms, and garage walls commonly run 10 to 20 ft. Tall walls behave differently than 8 ft walls: wind load bends them across a much longer span, so height drives every other decision.

Choose single or double studs

Tall wall math

Stud count works the same as a standard wall - length times 0.75 plus one at 16 OC - but material length is the real problem. Studs over 10 ft are a special order at many yards, and a doubled stud wall needs twice the count on the tall runs.

Blocking rows are cut to fit between studs: at true 16 OC that is 14-1/2 inches per block, and the count per row equals the number of stud bays.
